Second Life Helpful Resources Directory

I (Simeon) have compiled the following list of resources to help you get started and learn all you desire about the virtual world of Second Life. Some of these are also easy to find on the Second Life website if you know where to look for them, but that can take awhile! Hopefully the time I spent finding these and listing them here will save you some valuable time and effort. If you only use one of the following resources, make it Torley Linden's Video Tutorials, they are very well done, concise and quite numerous on just about every SL help topic you can possibly think of.

In addition to the resources above, I highly recommend looking for and taking the free classes available within the Second Life virtual world. The best classes are sponsored by an organization that uses the acronym "NCI".

To find a list of these classes, login to Second Life (after joining and downloading/installing their viewer) and then click the "Search" button at bottom center of your viewer. Choose the "Events" tab and type "NCI" (no double quotes) into the search box and search on that.

This will bring up a list of NCI classes being held and their date/time/location. All times given in-world are "Linden Time" (Pacific Time). You can click on the classes listed on the left and it will bring up more information about that class on the right. You can then teleport to the class location and set a 'Landmark" (LM) so that you can return at the correct time. I highly suggest this because sometimes the class is no longer listed in search when it gets too close to class time.

When you are in-world be sure to send Maia (Starheart Erdhein in SL) or myself (Chiron Chrzan in SL) an Instant Message (IM) and we will become your friends so we can be on each other's contacts list which makes it easier to stay in touch in-world.

One note of caution for those of you with children under age 18 or those of you who may take offense at nudity: there is a lot of nude body depictions in SL due to a vast number of reasons. There are PG areas where this is not so present and there are MATURE areas where it can be very prevalent and outright pornographic at times. Most of the places where you can obtain the stuff you need are in MATURE rated areas and so one is exposed to this a lot there. After awhile it sort of just blends in with the background. There is also a Teen Grid especially for teens where this type of stuff is controlled more tightly I believe.
